Tips for Planting Fall Bulbs
For a Natural Effect: Bulbs look best in clumps or drifts. To achieve this, dig a large area and plant several bulbs at once. Another way to pull off a natural effect is to simply toss the bulbs into the air and plant the bulbs where ever they fall. It is surprising how well this works.
Mark Your Plantings: Be sure to mark where you have planted your bulbs. This way you can be certain not to disturb the bulbs that you have already planted by trying to plant something in the same spot.
Spring Care: After your fall bulbs have bloomed in the spring, let the leaves die down naturally; do not cut them off or mow over them. It is important to let the bulbs rest after blooming because in this time the bulb will be gathering nutrients from the soil and growing so that it can bloom again the following year.
Dividing Bulbs: Many bulbs spread and increase, making the original plating over crowded. If your bulbs are flowering as well as they used to, this is probably the case. If you wish to move or divide your flowering bulbs, the safest time is when they enter their dormant period. This is usually just after the foliage completely dies back. Dormancy is brief, even though nothing is happening above ground, so don't put this task off.
