Fall Garden Calendar

Spring Garden Calendar

Annuals
April: Sow frost resistant annuals such as larkspur, sweet pea, calendula and California poppy
May: Begin planting after your local last frost date; Plant ornamental herbs such as dill and fennel
Bulbs
March: Start planting your begonias and caladiums indoors
May: Plant summer bulbs, such as calla lilies, dahlias, gladiolas.
Lawns
March: If your lawn isn't still frozen or wet, you may begin to clear off the winter debris
April: Rake, repair and re-seed if necessary; Apply a slow release fertilizer with corn gluten to prevent weeds from germinating
May: Treat and or dig weeds; Aerate after active growth begins; Mow at 5 to 6 cm and leave clippings on lawn.
Patio/Container Planters
April: Plant a spring container for the front door with pansies and early bulbs
May: Create containers with a variety of textures, colours and foliage; Use as many pants as possible and be sure to include trailers for an extra lush effect.
Perennials
March: Check your garden for any perennials that may have been pulled up because of frost and simply press them back into the ground
April: Finish tidying and remove winter mulch; Dig compost into beds once the soil is workable
May: Continue planting; divide and move overgrown plants.
Roses
March: Use dormant oil before the buds break
April: If not already done so, use dormant oil; Remove winter protection; Prune
May: Apply rose fertilizer.
Seeds
March: Start remaining seeds; sow tomato and lettuce seeds late in the month
April: Seed cool weather crops, such as lettuce, peas and spinach, directly in soil as soon as it can be worked
May: Plant vegetable seedlings.
Trees and Shrubs
March: Use dormant oil before buds break when necessary; prune trees and shrubs that flower after June
April: Fertilize as soon as new growth appears; Begin planting new trees and shrubs
May: Prune early flowering shrubs as needed

Bulbs
January: Discard any rotting bulbs that you have overwintered
February: Check your bulbs in storage for sprouts, and plant sprouted bulbs and keep in a bright area.
Lawns
December: Remove last of leave before snow fall
January: Try to keep off of your lawn when the ground is frozen (unless it's covered in snow).
Roses
December: Hill roses
January: Heap snow around bushes for additional protection, especially around hybrid teas
February: Check your rose bushes for damage and prune back any broken canes.
Seeds
January: Start slow germinating seeds indoors, such as begonias and geraniums
February: Start slow germinating vegetables, such as peppers and eggplants and be sure to give all seedlings as much lighting as possible.
Trees and Shrubs
December: Wrap susceptible shrubs and evergreens with burlap for winter protection
January: Brush snow from evergreens to prevent damage, however leave ice to melt
February: Prune any damage done by storms, but leave "bleeders" suck as maples and birches until they have leafed out.
